Time to Get Funky!

What Soul Train did was take black joy - the excitement, the vitality, the spirit of soul music, of black music, of funk, of the beginnings of disco - and put it here in a format for everyone could enjoy in their living room. It took the idea of blackness and took it away from the news as strife or as conflict…Soul Train not only entertained us, but it was a guide for style, a guide for dancing and a guide to music. So it was a very 360 cultural experience. — Writer Nelson George

What The Funk?!

For the first time, we were seeing ourselves on a national stage in every facet of our lives: politicians, teenagers, radio hosts, actors, comedians, musicians and singers. And it was unapologetically Black and undiluted. — Ericka Blount Danois

Oh What A Night!

“This was the creative genius of Don Cornelius: He took dances and songs so marginalized as black music, and as black audiences, and took them across all racial and ethnic lines,” — Author and commentator Earl Ofari Hutchinson
